Investment Advice in the Lake District
Stop guessing. Invest with purpose.
Work with James Curry in Cockermouth to give your investments a clear role in your life, with research-led decisions, understandable costs and room for the unexpected. Investments can fall in value and you may get back less than you invest.
Our investment philosophy
Your life sets the direction. Evidence shapes the portfolio.
Perhaps you are investing a lump sum, bringing scattered accounts together or preparing to draw an income. James starts with what that money needs to support and when you will need it. Evidence-based investing gives those personal goals a disciplined foundation, rather than leaving decisions to headlines. Through our steps from first conversation to financial plan, we connect your ambitions, cash needs and capacity for loss before recommending an investment mix.
Four principles to put your money to work with purpose
Base decisions on evidence
Leave stock tips and crystal balls to the headlines. James helps you connect established investment research to a practical decision: how to invest for the life you want, rather than chase the next fashionable fund. Historical research is not a guarantee of future returns.
Spread risk across global markets
Familiar companies can feel reassuring, but a portfolio built around them may leave you exposed to the same risks. Spreading investments across countries, sectors and companies reduces reliance on any one market. Diversification cannot prevent losses.
Keep avoidable costs under control
A higher price does not establish that a fund is better suited to you. We look at what you pay across your investments, platform and advice, and what you receive in return. Keeping unnecessary costs down leaves more of your money invested towards your goals.
Stay disciplined through uncertainty
When markets fall, it helps to have someone to talk to before acting. James can help you revisit your spending needs, cash reserves and reasons for investing. Past market recoveries do not mean that every investment will recover, or recover when you need the money.

Investing: The Evidence
What should you rely on when deciding how to invest? This documentary explores the research behind an evidence-based approach. Watch it as a starting point, then bring your questions to James so the ideas can be considered alongside your goals, rather than taken as a personal recommendation.
Less market noise. More focus on your life.
A hot fund manager, a higher-priced product or an urgent headline can all demand your attention. None tells you whether an investment fits your life. Our alternative is a suitable investment mix, careful attention to costs and a conversation before emotion drives a major decision.
You do not need to watch markets every day to take your investments seriously. You need to understand what you own, why it belongs in your plan and when a change deserves attention. Get to know James and the people behind your advice before deciding whether that kind of partnership is right for you.
Before you invest or make a change
What will James look at in an investment review?
Start with what you want the money to do and bring details of your existing accounts. James looks at the holdings together, including overlapping investments, concentrated risks, access restrictions and charges. He then considers whether they fit your timescale and spending needs. The aim is a clear recommendation, not change for its own sake, connected to your personal financial planning priorities.
How does investment evidence become a portfolio for me?
Research informs the approach; your circumstances determine its application. We discuss a suitable balance of shares, bonds and accessible cash in light of your goals and capacity for loss, rather than select funds on recent performance alone. You can explore the foundations of evidence-based investing before discussing what they mean for your own money. No approach can remove investment risk.
How do you decide how much investment risk I should take?
James talks through both how a fall would feel and what it would mean for your finances. Money needed soon, income from other sources and cash reserves all affect how much risk is suitable. If you are drawing on investments, the timing of losses matters as well as their size. That discussion sits alongside planning withdrawals for retirement, rather than treating a risk questionnaire as the whole answer.
Will you recommend transferring all my investments?
No. We first assess what you already own and why you hold it. Before recommending a transfer, James considers charges, tax consequences, restrictions and any benefits you could lose. Suitable existing arrangements can remain in place. If ethical preferences matter to you, we can also discuss how they affect suitability and the trade-offs involved, without assuming a particular product is the answer.
When should I revisit my investment plan?
A change in your life can matter more than a change in the market. Tell us if retirement, a sale, an inheritance or a new spending commitment changes what you need from your money. Where you choose ongoing advice, we agree the review service with you. Rebalancing means bringing a portfolio back towards its intended mix, with costs and tax consequences considered before changes. Pension investments also need to fit your decisions about pension access and contributions.
How will I know the full cost of investing?
We explain three separate costs: our advice fee, the platform charge for holding your investments and the charges within the funds. Your financial plan is quoted as a fixed fee before work begins; any ongoing advice fee reflects the agreed service and complexity. For smaller portfolios, a percentage charge can sometimes cost less, and we explain that option. Our guide to advice fees and what they cover explains the model. We disclose the combined costs before implementation so you can make an informed decision.
